Roofing and Siding in Double Oak
Double Oak is a town of about 3,000 people on Flower Mound's northern border. On June 11, 2023 it was where the largest hail of the night was reported.
4.25 Inches
- 4.25 in.
- hail reported near Double Oak on June 11, 2023, in National Weather Service reports relayed by CBS Texas
- 3,054
- residents at the 2020 census
- 2.5 sq. mi.
- total area of the town
A stone four and a quarter inches across is larger than a baseball; it is about the size of a softball. Hail that large does not bruise a shingle, it breaks it, and it can crack decking, split ridge caps, puncture vents and break skylights and windows. A viewer's caption on NBC DFW that evening called it the largest hail in Double Oak in many years.
The figure is for a point near the town, on one evening. It does not mean every roof in Double Oak took a stone that size.
CBS Texas, "Hail reported in North Texas," June 16, 2023, citing National Weather Service Fort Worth reports. Population and area: U.S. census counts as relayed in the place's Wikipedia entry, read October 2026. NBC DFW viewer gallery, June 11, 2023.
After Hail That Size
Where stones of that size fell, most shingle roofs will have been replaced by now. For a Double Oak owner in 2026 the useful questions are about what happened next:
- Was the deck checked? Very large hail can fracture decking under the shingle. A re-roof over cracked sheets leaves soft spots. A contractor can check from the attic.
- What went back on? If the new roof is a standard shingle, it is no better armored than the old one. See impact-rated shingles.
- Were the walls dealt with? Siding, fascia, window trim and screens on the storm side take the same hits. See siding repair and trim.
- Outbuildings. Detached garages, workshops and barns are often left out of the first round of repairs.
If the roof was not replaced, have it inspected. See hail damage inspection.
