Hail Damage Inspection in Flower Mound
On June 11, 2023 the local paper reported hail as large as baseballs here. If nobody has been on your roof since, this is the page to read.

In Brief
Hail damage to shingles is often invisible from the ground and can take seasons to turn into a leak.
An inspection looks at the whole exterior, not only the shingles: soft metal, siding, trim, screens and gutters all record a storm.
This site does not file, negotiate, adjust or settle insurance claims. The inspection tells you what is on the house; what happens next with a policy is between you and your insurer.
The Storm on Record
The Cross Timbers Gazette reported on June 12, 2023 that hail as large as baseballs fell on Lantana, Flower Mound, Highland Village and Lewisville between about 8 and 8:30 the previous evening, damaging homes and vehicles. National Weather Service reports relayed by CBS Texas put 4.25-inch hail near Double Oak, on Flower Mound's northern edge, the same night.
Those reports name towns. They do not tell you what fell on your street, and no count of damaged roofs was found. The storm page sets out the sources and their limits.
The Cross Timbers Gazette, June 12, 2023; CBS Texas, June 16, 2023, citing National Weather Service Fort Worth reports.
What a Hail Mark Is, and Is Not
| On | Hail usually leaves | Often mistaken for hail |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingles | A round or oval bruise where granules are crushed into or knocked off the mat, soft to the touch, sometimes with a crack in the mat beneath | Blisters that popped, scuffs from foot traffic, granule loss from plain age, marks from tree limbs |
| Ridge caps | Splits and missing corners; caps are bent over the ridge and break more easily | Heat cracking on old caps |
| Metal vents, flashing, gutters, downspouts | Round dents with no paint scraped away | Ladder dings, which are creased and usually near the eave |
| Painted wood trim and fascia | Chips to bare wood on the side that faced the storm | Ordinary peeling from sun and age |
| Siding | Cracks or holes in brittle boards, dents in metal, chipped paint | Impact from lawn equipment near the ground |
| Window screens | Small tears and stretched dimples | Pet and age damage |
The soft metal matters because it does not heal or get re-roofed away. Dents on a vent cap or downspout show that hail of some size reached the house, and from which direction, even years later.
How the Visit Goes
- A walk around the house first: downspouts, screens, trim, the air conditioner's fins, the mailbox.
- Then the roof, slope by slope. Inspectors commonly mark a test area on each slope and count what is inside it.
- Photographs of each mark with something for scale, and wider shots showing where on the roof it is.
- A written summary: which slopes, how many marks, what else was hit, and whether repair or replacement is the contractor's recommendation.
Ask for the photos. A recommendation to replace a roof should be something you can show to anyone.
If the Roof Was Already Replaced After the Storm
Then the shingles are not the question, but the rest of the house may be. Siding on a gable, a chimney box, fascia and window trim were under the same hail, and they are often left out of a roof job. The fascia, soffit and trim and siding repair pages cover those.
Questions on This Page
Can I see hail damage from the ground?
Sometimes on metal and trim, rarely on shingles. Dented downspouts and torn screens are the clues a homeowner can check safely.
The storm was in 2023. Does old hail damage still matter?
For the roof, yes. A bruise that broke the shingle mat lets water in and sheds granules over time. For insurance, policies have deadlines, and only your insurer or agent can tell you where yours stands.
Will the contractor tell me if there is no damage?
A sound report is a legitimate result and you should expect to hear it when it is true. Asking for photographs either way keeps everyone honest.
